Oh man, I want to know your rationale for that one. I haven't dug too deep in the band so I'm unsure of the legal stuff. I'm assuming that's to do with some label bullshittery.

I didn't follow it too closely but they had some insane legal battle with one of their album cover artists and it spiralled into fucking insanity basically. I think it was a huge part of why it took so long for this to come out, also Maynard has been very active with his other projects so I doubt it was his fault

It feels recycled is the problem. I like Culling Voices just fine and that’s probably the most meditative song on the record. Culling Voices, Descending, and Tempest are my favorites because there actually feels like some progression from Lateralus and 10k Days. The other three literally just feel like they were written during those sessions and just now recorded to round out a full record.

I like it.
A lot of it does feel recycled which is problematic.
It could be trimmed.
Honestly, the highlight for me here is still Invincible... the meta-self-reflection in that song hit like a truck

"Tempest blows? Are we getting the hottest take on sput in 10 years?"
It's just a mess of a song. The lyrics are maaaybe the worst of any tool song. Cookies and cream is awful, but "we're not buying your dubious state of serenity" is some of the most fedora'd lyrics I've heard in years. Awful
Then, the guitar solo is just lifeless wanking. There is no progression. It's just a bunch of solo.
And it irritates me a bit that the start is basically straight up ripping king crimson.
Oh and the snare drum sound sucks too.
5/10 song, culling voices is a 3/10

So many hot takes there.
Honestly I agree, Tempest lyrics do nothing for me but the instrumentation is phenomenal. I think it's a bit overrated though.
But.
This album easily has my favourite solos they've done, Jones is on point in that respect

Nah tempest is fire especially if you ignore Maynard which is what I choose to do throughout this entire record

I get that this isn't Maynard's best performance but the hate just feels overblown. He's fucking old. Like every song has some good Maynard parts at least

Him being old is fine, it feels phoned in.

Egarran, I made the exact same complaint at the time of release - "13 years for a bunch of recycled ideas?" At least 10,000 Days had some unique moments throughout.

I will never get the Maynard's hate really...
I can't imagine this album without his vocals and I'd actually argue this is his most artsy/felt performance for Tool, maybe not the best technically but the most memorable.

and the hot takes keep coming. I don't think it's his best at all but I think the hate for it is overblown

I don't hate it but his performance is just so unmemorable
Particularly compared to all mother tool albums.

yeah but they were young and hungry and trying to succeed back then. Now he's old and retired to his vineyard and has other bands who actually make music

Yeah I get the reasons. I just always preferred Maynard with a bit of fire. Particularly in Tool. I enjoy his softer side in APC. His melodies and lyrics are very weak here IMO

Partially agree. I love what he's doing on Descending, Invincible and Pneuma. The rest is whatever. I've always liked him in APC more anyway so I don't care

I like his vocals on this album except on 73mp35T. Some of his lyrics are a bit cringe, but he's a 60+ winemaking millionaire trying to be spiritual, so i can cut him a bit of slack. Overall he still delivers. Descending is some of the best singing he's done.

He’s fantastic on Descending but he’s also absent for the last 7 minutes.
