It was just a matter of time before the notorious Tool bashers emerged from their lairs

Easily the worst Tool album and it's not even up for debate.

I honestly can't get on board with that. It just sounds like 4 tired old men with nothing new to say (musically and lyrically) who have been sitting in their own echo chamber for far too long. I'll always love Aenema and Lateralus but this is just a snore fest IMO.

I think this album is ridiculously inconsistent. There’s one track that is a complete bore and possibly the worst song they’ve ever made (Pneuma), Invincible and Culling Voices would be great if they had like 3-4 minutes chopped off each. Not every fucking song needs to be 10+ mins. However, I do think Descending and 7empest are among their best material. Title track is just kind of there, literally could’ve told me it was a Lateralus/10k Days b side and I would’ve believed you.
Chocolate chip trip would be a lot better without the annoying ass synth, maybe something a little less garish. Interludes are fucking useless and I haven’t listened to them in nearly six years.

I totally get where you guys are coming from. In a way I agree. But I still like the meat of this. The interludes are laughable

It's completely new to me that this band seems to attract haters.

Correct take. Easily the worst Tool album, it's not close. There's nothing on this album that comes even remotely close to The Grudge, or 46&2, or Opiate or Sober or Rosetta Stoned. Not even close. A 3/5 is too high of rating, you should pan it because this album is not only the worst Tool album, it actually sucks.

who would have thought?????
And no, it doesn't suck. It's a hard listen but no, saying it sucks is frankly despicable

nah Descending rules and Tempest is great too. Invincible has some good parts to it, that last couple of minutes are absolute fire. Culling Voices is a nice meditative track right before the fifteen minute explosion that is Tempest.
a 3.6 avg seems about right to me.

it's funny, this album is such a retread of old stuff yet I love it and hate it at the same time. Most people I know are lukewarm on it or just hate it but my feelings on this one are a raging storm still

I definitely think it would have been a much better album if basically every song was culled by a few minutes. Not cos they are too long, just that there are so many meandering sections that don't really add any value to the songs. Intros for tempest and descending, for example. The interludes are obviously just lol. Maynard sounds super uninspired here too.
On a side note, I did happen to catch the live debut of tempest 6 years ago. It just so happened that there was a massive storm going on outside when they played it, which felt quite serendipitous.
