Watershed had some great moments. The first few minutes of The Lotus Eater with cleans over blast beats is as good as it gets!
Nothing after had been remotely up my street.

Watershed rules. Not a single bad track on that album

Watershed and Heritage are same level of quality for me. Nothing since has matched those two, which are their best outside the big 5: BWP, SL, GR, Damnation, and MAYH.

As much as I like MAYH and SL, I feel they're overrated in terms of their catalogue. Drumming and vocals improved greatly after that era. BWP is where they really hit their stride. That said, there are things I prefer about their old era. I really dig that old reverb laden and stripped down production quality of their first few. I also really dig the focus on melodies on Orchid and the folky acoustic stuff on morningrise

@Eakflanderyof You express some of my opinions and thoughts very well, and I wonder if BW was your first touch with Opeth, as was the case with me? At the delicate age of 15 BW park was br00tal enough for me to care, but their older albums were too out-there for my Iron-Maiden-binging ass, which affected the way I see currently their first era, ten years later.

The first opeth i really loved was actually white cluster and I honestly don't remember which album I listened to first. I think I listened to GR and BWP around the same time because I got into them around the time GR was released

White Cluster is underrated and amazing, probably like my 10th favorite Opeth track.

Wait...

How can it be their best since Heritage if you rated Sorceress higher than this? Wouldn't Sorceress be their best since Heritage then?

I'm confused.

If you're referring to my review score for Sorceress being 4.1 and this 3.7, that initial review (and the PC one back in 2014) were back when I was more of an Opeth apologist/fanboy lol. My current ratings are how I actually feel when I faced reality.

If I could be totally objective about opeth, I'd probably say watershed is their best album. It has probably the best musicianship and songwriting of any of their albums overall. It's basically ghost reveries 2.0 without any of the filler sections
