Yeah couldn't get into this. I like a lot about it but it's just so sluggish. I heard a little of the album before it and that is more my style, I might go backwards through their discography to see what they've done previously. I think I would like these guys, but this is the wrong album to start on.

Will never understand why people like 'I'll Still Destroy You' that much. Sounds average here, sounded even more average live :/
People love epic outros

I'll Still Destroy You is tied with Dark Side for my favorite on here. It has an excellent chorus and builds amazingly; that whole last third of the song is one of their finest moments imo

Disappointing. The lustre is lost on this one I’m afraid

That’s how I felt about Trouble Will Find Me for years after it was released and now that’s my third fave National, hopefully you’ll have a similar path with this one.

This one isn't as good as the previous three - imo because of songs like Empire Line/I'll Still Destroy You and to a lesser extent Dark Side where production gloss and 'dreaminess' wins out over proper balls out hooks/lyrics. They're what dock a .5 off this.
I'm at peace with turtlehead now though.

I mean, any facet in which this is “weak” is only in the sense of “weak relative to the National’s other material”. I’m itslef this is still a beast, no pun intended.

Turtleneck is vital to the album's flow IMO. Would drag too much without it.
