I started transcribing the drums and bass on this album on Reason so I can play guitar along with it / be able to slow down the songs and learn the solos. The actual recordings are much slower in tempo than they are in my head lol

Kirk’s best solos were on their first two albums, and it was as if he slowly got worse after that. Now he’s about as bad as Lars...actually, Lars has gotten better on the studio albums than Kirk has.
Slayer had the same issue, where the first album had their best solos and then after that they started all the WEEELELELULYLULULELELUU shit

"Kirk’s best solos were on their first two albums, and it was as if he slowly got worse after that." afaik a lot of the solo material of the first two albums wasn't written by hammet, he just adopted them

I was under the impression that Lars and James were behind the music for most of the 80s material. They basically just told Kirk when it was time for him to play a guitar solo and that was pretty much all they let him contribute to the music. I forget where I heard that.
