Yeah, I found the cleaner tracks in particular grew on me. Give it time, maybe you'll reconsider.

"Sorry, Gwyn, you honestly may have an easier time of getting me to 5 CI. "Prancer" isn't a great song, but I feel the album starts strong with the first 3 tracks and then starts to lose it as it trudges forward (like a naked Paul Bettany)."

wasn't serious lol

XD Yeah, this is a 3.5 for me. This album does some things better than CI and other things much worse (for all the energy present, it feels really gray).

finally gave this a listen. it's good, like, the songs are ~good~ but I feel like I've heard it all before. usually I wouldn't really care (hypocrite alert: new National album is the same as their last ones sort of, but I still love love love it) but for a band like this that has constantly re-invented themselves with each album, this just feels lazy. there are dozens of parts that make me think that they're trying to re-create the Calculating Infinity magic, which is futile given their current lineup. Also, nothing really stuck out. That could change on repeated listens, but OP had so many tracks that stuff out as unique within the context of the album. Farewell Mona Lisa, Gold Teeth on a Bum, Parasitic Twins, etc. I felt approximately the same about every song on this album, which leads me to believe that it's gonna settle in as "too samey" to me.

It definitely is good though, and fans of TDEP should be satisfied, but I think I wanted something really different from this album. Gotta listen a few more times, but I'd put it somewhere in the 3.5 range, disappointing considering I had OP at a 5 for most of the year when it came out.
