i am lying in bed jamming Ben Howard lol, no time to revisit this yet but it does make me nostalgic
and the Metallica - > A7X lineage is not a hot take lol, their influence is all over the shop

It’s got a lot more ballads than all of their other records for sure, but the ballads here are really well done imo. And they’re all better than dumpster fire like Dear God or Seize the Day.
I’d honestly say they’re all really strong songs it’s just that putting them all in the last half of the record was… a choice.
I’d take out Danger Line completely and maybe move So Far Away few tracks earlier.
And their ballads got significantly better with their newest albums, Roman Sky and Cosmic are two of their best songs.

Metallicas black album is directly responsible for avenged sevenfold and I’ll never forgive them for that

Yeah lol the sequencing here is uh something, but I get that they had to go heavy on that pop metal opening salvo
Victim and Tonight the World Dies are really tightly realised songs afaicr - So Far Away and Fiction have a lot of heart to them but don't have the same depth of songwriting maybe. Good roster though

Yeah, the ballads are the real star of the show here. And as far as the heavy tunes go, my personal favorites are Danger Line, Natural Born Killer, and Save Me
The first two songs are the only straight-up duds imo

Dear God isn't even bad it's just not as good as anything here.
Also, Save Me is such a perfect closer

Save Me is probably the reason why I like longer songs lol. But yeah, best A7X easily and their most cohesive listen.

Dear God is probably their worst song agreed.

Agreed. Never liked that song much, even when i was 14. Even for the Self-Titled album, it felt out of place.

Aside from I Won’t See You Tonight they really couldn’t write ballads to save their lives before this record. Warmness on the Soul and Dear God are equally awful. Seize the Day is easily the worst track on CoE.
The slide guitar is so fucking terrible on Dear God

Dear God slander is all well and good, but it still pulls off the frankly stunning achievement of being the less cringe bookend on the s/t

Let’s just pretend that the live lbc version is the only version of critical acclaim because you might be right johnny

Dear God slander is weird to me because thats a song that's brought me to tears on more than one occasion so it feels weirdly like I'm being subconsciously judged

I get why people like it, and honestly I know a bunch of people that love that song,
… but on the other hand that song makes me understand why people hate the band. It’s one of their most streamed songs, if that was my introduction to the band I’d probably shit on them too.
I really don’t care for most country music in the first place, even just the idea of Avenged Sevenfold making a country song sounds bad to me.

Dear God does suck, but what exactly is wrong with Seize the Day? It's a perfectly serviceable song, it just overstays its welcome. Though COE is full of long tracks, so...

"I really don’t care for most country music in the first place, even just the idea of Avenged Sevenfold making a country song sounds bad to me."
yeah that I understand. i have a soft spot for some country/americana vibes, but it's usually reserved to artists not trying to pander with hackneyed southern stereotypes. i don't give a shit about your tractor or your beer, just give me something I can feel.
