a lot of thrash and post-thrash bands took great inspiration from ajfa but none managed to take it into as interesting a direction as meshuggah did with cc

I guess I just really love their mechanical/quite over the top robotic vibe on the one hand, their mega organic feel on the other, and their tongue in cheek nature/not suffering from taking themselves too seriously, and a very welcome lack of arrogance or stuck-up-ness. Also they release fantastic album after fantastic album.

"Meshuggah do have a much broader appeal than one might imagine"

Absolutely true. In a way they're very accessible or catchy even, because they 100% focus on groove and that is something many people enjoy.

I agree, but I feel like their mainstream popularity came with Bleed. Ask how many dudes "into Meshuggah" jam Chaosphere on the reg, or could sit through a listen of CC. I do feel like DEI is their most accessible album pre-Obzen.

This is so funny to hear now, because Bleed is what almost swore me off Meshuggah forever. It wasn’t until I hear their earlier work that I started reevaluating them and enjoying the hell out of their music

my first album was the Contradictions Collapse/NONE EP, and I was confused as hell when I bought it cause I had never heard polyrhythms and was like 14 lol. But I kept jamming it because it was so damn heavy and I loved the atmosphere despite it breaking my feeble brain

My first was Chaosphere, I lived to tell the tale... just

Weirdly the only 'shug I'd actively want to revisit... also heard this, Nothing, I + Obzen.

I'm of the (somewhat rare?) opinion that they've aged incredibly - Koloss is an absolute monster of a record and Violent Sleep of Reason is probably my favorite at this point, but it's definitely an exhausting listen.

That isn't at all an unusual opinion Cotton! Many people feel that way.

Isn't that a difficult paradox with no way out Demon? Or was that your plan? Eeeek!
