Tool made a decent post-metal album. That's Fear Inoculum for me. On one hand, I admire how complex it is musically yet it is very accessible despite the long song lengths. On the other hand. it gets a bit repetitive somewhere between "Invincible" and "Descending", and "Culling Voices" kinda drags a bit at the end as well, though I like some aspects of each song. They definitely could have more fun with this album and ramp up the heaviness/grit a little bit. But it's good for what it is.
The Tool b-side ("The Witness"), which was used by Adam Jones to promote his Les Paul custom guitar, proves the band still has the spark to write brighter musical compositions. At this point, it's safe to say Maynard is the weakest link of the band, so I hope he brings back some of that fire he brought to previous albums for the next release.

You could drop Maynard right now, hire an actual vocalist with range, and get a better TOOL album next go around. It'll never happen because their contract is probably tighter than dick skin but a take is still a take.
