Hmm I guess I don't see it...
I pretty much love all Smiths. I suppose the production on Strangeways is way cleaner, but I love it on here.

I mean the production isn't bad, it's just not immediately appealing to me. I generally prefer my music to sound as un-produced as possible - not necessarily lo-fi, just natural, so that you don't really even notice the production.

Well even if the production throws you off, the lyricism on this is brilliant

Oh yeah, I'm only a few listens in but the pure material is awesome. "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" (which I've known for a long time, The Smiths are one of my mother's favorite bands lol) is beyond perfect.

There is a Light is a classic yeah, but I think I prefer a few other songs on here

I expect the other songs will grow on me too, I'm probably speaking too soon with this whole production thing.

I actually didn't like this the first time I heard it. They one day at my old job I decided to put it on and omg I was hooked.

I've noticed a weird trend lately of people hating on The Smiths it's crazy

Not really.
Morrissey is a certified cunt with an obnoxious voice and their songwriting is too samey. As Boney pointed out the production sucks too.
They have some classic individual tunes, that I can't deny, though I still prefer them recorded as covers.
In the outside world, away from internet music fans, this band split opinion like no other. Most people HATE this band. Walk out of the pub stuff. Seriously, disliking The Smiths is pretty standard.

It's the word on the ground in good ol' Blighty.
Rest of the world? Not a clue. I'm sure they have a huge following in Japan. Who doesn't fancy themselves as a karaoke Morrissey?
