albums grown on me. Love the risk they took.

Tbh I am not a fan of Matt taking a backseat here. At all. Sometimes doesn’t even feel like I’m listening to The National.

I actually really really like So Far, So Fast but totally don't get Not in Kansas and the interludes.

grower for sure

It has its moments to be sure. I just hope it isn't their final LP. Would be a bigger let down than the GOT finale if so lol

Cut the weak opener, the pointless interludes, and either do that to The Pull of You or just rework the damn song, the feat on that one is so bad
I actually like Kansas

i might have this at a 4 if it werent for the weaker tracks and bloated nature of the album, yeah.

Relistening now and the entire first half (up to but not inc. Where Is Her Head) could have been comfortably cut with the only possible exceptions of Quiet Light and the t/t :[

Yeah this is merely good. Sleep Well Beast is such a masterpiece; it hurts my head to think that some people dismiss it as boring when it's the second best album in their discography (which amplified the disappointment here).

SWB does have some total snoozers tbf, but it was worth it to hear them broaden their palette that way (+ the highlights were great and many)

The t/t and closer there is maybe the best thing they've ever written, it's really grown on me in a huge way. The depth and experimentalism alone make it worth another listen for anyone who dismissed the entire album initially and/or perhaps didn't even make it to the end of the record.

Mmm yeah that song feels like something you have to have made it to the end of a full listen to appreciate, but it rounds things off perfectly. Love how I'll Still Destroy You is like a different, more upbeat side of the same coin earlier on too - that one covers similar bases and is a real keeper

Great to see SWB love, it's underrated and easily their best outside the big 3 (Alligator, Boxer, HV) for me

I'll Still Destroy You was always my favorite on SWB but the t/t overtook it. I love how the song basically disintegrates right before out ears. Much of the album is about growing old and losing touch "with everything you're still in touch with" (to quote a line from I'll Still Destroy You), aka dissociating from kinship with others and becoming an isolated entity until death. When he sings "I'm at a loss, I'm at a loss, I'm losing grip, the fabric's ripped" on the t/t I just about lose it every time. I can just picture him figuratively grasping for something emotionally worthwhile to hold onto, but by the end of the song he basically concedes defeat ("I'll still destroy you someday, sleep well, beast"). Gives me chills to think how well constructed that song is and how it circles back lyrically. Perfection.
