I love the confessional tone and bare, personal feel of this record. However, I can't help but feel this could - musically and substantially - have been so much more. This had the enormous potential to become one of folk's all-time greatest records and the final product was just a sonically pleasant listen with some occasional gut-wrenching lyrics, imo.

But like the same can be said about Leonard Cohen's albums and they are considered folk's greatest

I don't get that argument

Nah, I think Cohen's most acclaimed albums are way more substantial in what comes to melodic aspects, and in terms of general music delivery as well. It kinda feels sappy to me sometimes on Carrie & Lowell. Just an opinion, however.

I feel like this album uses a lot of very simple ideas lyrically that would seem fairly basic in any other setting, but somehow he is able to make them feel so personal that he really becomes even more transparent and easy to connect to... they move from a simple ideas to haunting thoughts.

dbizzles, definitely! And I know this is Sufjan at his most personal, and I feel very bad that I don't enjoy this record the way I could/should... it just ain't doing that much for me, though. Still, I respect Sufjan Stevens a LOT for taking such a leap towards more confessional and stripped down territory, especially after a bold and experimental record like Age of Adz.
