I was driving to work, at work now. I'll read any replies you have when I go on break. I will legitimately excited if anyone can name a band that plays death metal that distinctly isn't any other subgenre and doesn't sound anything like any "old school" style.

Honestly that's not the angle I would come at it from. I went back to check a few songs to make sure I'm not remembering completely wrong, but here's how it feels to me.

If you were to ask me "hey, what comes to mind first when you think of 2000s mainstream death metal?", like the stuff that most people were talking about, the stuff that was getting popular on youtube in 2007 ish, the stuff that a lot of people on facebook and other normie places that arent ma or metalstorm were talking about...

We're talking more junz-like riffing and fewer trems. We're talking triggered drums everywhere that sound too clean. We're talking clean production in general that makes shit sound sterile and not as interesting as 90s classics. We're talking KILL and Evisceration Plague, we're talking Organic Hallucinosis, we're talking Stench of Redemption, we're talking Dechristianize, we're talking Demigod and The Apostasy. We're talking whatever the fuck Kataklysm and Vader were putting out in the mid 2000s. Also Bloodbath.

And here's the thing. It's probably not your intention to do this, but asking for death metal "that distinctly isn't any other subgenre" is a little misguided. Because one of the main issues with 2000s death metal *was* that subgenres blew up in popularity. And a lot of people *were* in fact conflating some melodeath with death, some brutal death with death, some tech death with death. Not to mention bands that certainly had elements of death metal in them but kinda did their own thing, like Opeth and Gojira. Necrophagist were pretty big. Stuff like Spawn of Possession and Defeated Sanity weren't exactly obscure either. And then let's be honest have you never seen anyone talk about death metal and bring up Amon Amarth or At The Gates (obviously Slaughter...)? Cuz I remember plenty of those back then.

I don't even dislike most of the stuff I namedropped. Genuinely, go look at my ratings. But it's a far cry in style when compared to your Incantations and your Autopsies and your Entombeds of the world. Which is why I think the idea of OSDM revival is not useless.

I know you guys are too cool for it now, but you all should check Temple of Void, if you haven't already, before their new release this month.

One could argue that death metal going in that direction started in the 90s and what most people consider "old school" from the 90s is distinctly more overproduced, mainstream, and unlike the death metal that emerged in the 80s

So if I were to ever take the term OSDM seriously, I would probably only ever apply it to 80s dm

if death metal changed then it wouldnt be death metal, it would be something else, just like any other genre, the fuck is snox talking about. "death metal has always been death metal, no one has ever played death metal and not been death metal, isnt that crazy??"

its a band cashing in on a trend. While interdimensional extinction was an okay album they went to shit REAL quick. Also due to their overinflated popularity by cashing in on the shitty OSDM revival fad yhe fans tend to be plastic cut/paste 'metalheads' who think they are underground as fuck. Their music is dry and derivative. The fans are annoying and also the whole shitty gatecreepercore trend shit.
