i really don't understand how something so unlike anything else even within its own subgenre boundaries can be described as 'mediocre'

Apparently Neige illustrated and designed the album art himself too! That man has so much skill.

For this album? No, it's by Førtifem, an illustrator duo. You can google them. The previous artworks are by fellow Frenchman Fursy Tessier who also has his black-gaze band Les Discrets.
Neige used to paint, but he doesn't anymore due to his commitment to his music.

Just looked it up, it's interesting since it does list Førtifem as illustrators on top. Maybe he was involved in the font or something like that. The actual illustrations are definitely by them though (and they're also making the artwork for the forthcoming Sylvaine album)

Yeah, possibly. The cd version credits list Fortifem & Neige as ''Ilustrations, design and hand written titles''. He might have handwritten the titles then...

That'll be it, probably. On a side-note, the artwork was inspired by the style of Takato Yamamoto, who is my favorite visual artist ever along with Beksinski. Worth checking out!

I'm going to hear this whole record played live next Wednesday. Especially curious how Onyx is going to sound live, might be an effective way to end that part of the setlist after the highs of the other tracks.

That's how they started their show last year when I saw them at least. They uses Onyx as an intro and it worked well

Yeah, I've seen that too, but I wondered wether it would be different for the whole-album setlist they are touring with now. Guess we'll see in a few days.
