The production is what makes this more abrasive than Kanye's past works. While he used to work with orchestras, he now makes grimy tunes like the opening track here, which is quite unlike anything you'd find on MBDTF

sure
and omaha you know i love you. but while MBDTF was accessible on first listen, this is accessible on perhaps third listen. which if you think about it, is not really that inaccessible.

so i don't get why people are driving themselves up a wall because this kanye album is slightly less pretty than the last one even though it's ballpark just as good
*flies away to fight crime*

I never really said it was inaccessible either, just that this is harder to digest from the get-go than his other works
I'd agree with you that in the grand scheme of things this isn't a shocker from Kanye-- it's just that I honestly didn't care enough to give this a second spin until now

Fine. But that doesn't make it so abrasive in general that you should not be able to give it an objective listen much sooner than the what 6 months since it came out. Considering that is your job. You, as I, should be of the more experienced listeners, and hear what quality is as soon as you hear it (generally).
I'm just saying. This whole "Yeezus is growing on me" was a very common trend all year, and is simply reflective of the fact that people listen to reviews/opinions etc. before they go into a piece and allow that to influence their opinions and thus do not give truly objective opinions.
This might not even be the case with you. But when I see this same trend reoccurring on this site and elsewhere, it gets quite annoying, because it shows the sheep mentality of music/culture (as opposed to enjoying quality art as quality), which in turn is a huge pet-peeve of mine.

I wanted to reference your soundoff where you talked about how lazy Kanye is but looks like you beat me to the punch just barely...

Chuck, this is something I do in my spare time, man. I didn't put my name on the Reviewing Yeezus list, I'm just another listener like you-- and there's abs nothing with me being turned off from an album like this on the first listen
|
| |
either way, I'm sure there's some legitimate criticisms of Yeezus but the vast majority of them come off as stubborn, misinformed, misguided, or in a few cases, apparently, amazingly ignorant and racist (or something? not sure how to describe what goes through Hilary's head).

Eric, realized that sound-off isn't quite how I feel about this anymore. Do still find the cut-and-paste songwriting on parts of this a bit lazy, though

this is extremely presumptuous. but then most of your opinions are so, it's apt.
