The vocals are the least important thing for me but they still rule.

I'd say that's true for appreciating the majority of BM as a whole, Game.

First wave is that raw primordial sound, second wave is that evil, cold isolated sound. Like Hawks said first wave is good but second wave is GOAT bm

second wave borrows from 1st wave, black metal was never originally associated with the cold, more like the pits of hell.

damn i dig what you guys are saying but 2nd wave is such a specific sound, for me i can just listen to under a funeral moon and that's sufficient for the entire genre. but first wave has the best stuff, early destruction/sodom/kreator, bathory, hellhammer, celtic frost, it's all the best metal IMO

idk opinions n stuff

First wave for sure was about Hell and whatnot but most iconic second wave bands and albums off the top of my head are thematically winter-ish or foggy forests

1st wave is undefined and underappreciated, even Morbid Angel and Slayer are considered part of the 1st wave, this album is 1st wave when most people think it's second wave.

I hear 1st wave in Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal, Satyricon and Emperor.

"I hear 1st wave in Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal, Satyricon and Emperor."

never listened to much old Burzum but before he got into his hypnotic rhythms I assume he was prob doin 1st wave stuff? And wasn't Blaze kind of inbetween? Their other stuff is def second wave, right? The other three bands are all second wave.
