This album is a joyless experience, while it demonstrates competent, even complex instrumental arrangements there is no real identity or emotion to this album. Fear Inoculum is a skeleton with no face.

"ive gotten much more out of philosophy by reading the classics and following the threads of discussion from the beginning, and those threads almost never end up with these guys but with academics (and all old journal articles are free now anyways, and the ones that arent you can get by emailing the academic themselves)"

Always the case for almost anything

"Wrong, I study philosophy as a hobby since I'm 12 lol"

You being 12 clears up so much, thank you.

And while I understand engaging with opposing opinions, Harris does not always surround himself with good actors or reliable people. So much of the IDW has been about engaging opposing ideas that are really fucking dumb and don't belong in academia, so they're sequestered to Podkastisan and fed to idiots. There are better resources for knowledge.

My bad if I have too verbose of an interpretion of life for you.

And shit, I'm not a philosopher either (less than Mort even, I only have a BA), but neither are these fools and, like Mort said, actual, good philosophy exists and is extremely accessible. Plato is timeless and you can find everything he ever wrote free on the internet. Or shit, the Stanford encyclopedia of philosophy is another great resource.

"As far as IDW idiots go, he's probably the least offensive"

I mean I can tell that I like him more than you just based on some things you've said, but who else is in the IDW again?

Dave Rubin is a fucking moron, which upsets me because I have had a similar political journey as him (although holy shit I'm nowhere near as conservative as he has become now) and we even went to the same high school.

The Weinsteins sometimes have some interesting things to say, but Bret went off the fucking deep end once COVID hit

I've already said my thoughts on Peterson.

I guess Ben Shapiro is in it, but I don't really see him as anything more than a mainstream conservative so how the hell does he even fit into that?

I mean tbh I don't even consider Sam Harris to be remotely apart of that group. Even with his shortcomings, he at least has on legitimate intellectuals from different areas of studies constantly. He doesn't JUST go off on "SJWs are dumb lulz" schtick all the time like Dave Rubin.

And in terms of philosophy, yeah I agree it's better to read the classics. I don't generally go to Sam for philosophy, though (even though I know he prides himself on that).

This is definitely my main complaint with online media in general, although I think Harris is the least offensive of this. Although the ONE time where I side eyed him was having on Charles Murray. Like what the fuck was even the point of that?

But yeah, I do hate the argument of "oh if you don't platform the most psychotic people in the universe, you're against free speech!" Obviously I think it's trash to just be in your own echo chamber and not talk to anyone who is politically different than you (a genuine problem of both the right and the left now), but that doesnt mean you have to have on Nick Fuentes or someone like that.

As far as I know its not really a title any of them chose for themselves, as opposed to being moreso a general category of internet guru. I use it to broadly discuss people who posture themselves as free thinking intellectuals and disseminate their ideas without academic oversite on the internet, but that's a fair point that I'm not being particularly clear. I'd probably include Steven Pinker, the Weinstein brothers, Lex Friedman, and Christina Hoff Summers too, but I really could have used a better term tbh

Nah man it's not just you, I've seen everyone refer to the "IDW" and am often trying to figure out who is included

Lex having Kanye on for like 4 hours made me question some of his choices lol

"You being 12 clears up so much, thank you."

Ha-ha-ha...

Since I'm from Europe I don't know if it's the same but I was going to study for a philosophy BA back in the day, but one philosophy teacher recommended me not to go for it unless I wanted to starve for the rest of my life (philosophy related job exists in here (and everywhere ig) are very very scarce). Joke was I got into an even weirder field (chess) after getting bored to death in a computer programming course (coupled with some personal issues).

Well I'm one of those who think every idea has a place to be discussed, the problem is 90% people don't want to hear "pedantic" philosophy podcasts, and in the end podcasts mean money for their authors, and in a capitalist world that's what makes you thrive. So 1+1 means 99% of podcasts are not the greatest resource for learning philosophy, instead they are used to create sensationalist performances about topics which sell and generate $$$. That being said I must say Sam Harris has one of the best podcasts in that realm from what I've listened to so far. There are also good philosophy debate forums on the internet with great resources, not every internet thing is subpar.

Anyway I'm very happy to see some people actually took the BA way for Philosophy. I always kept reading philosophy as a hobby, and I barely had any contact with the "online intellectuals" until someone recommended me Sam Harris's Waking Up podcast.

Rofl, you know, there is this classic chess player called Paul Morphy who said something of the sort when talking about chess: “The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman. The ability to play chess well is the sign of a wasted life.”

ngl, I don't know enough about Charles Murray to comment on his SH appearance, but from a quick google he seems like a rough guest

And yeah man I completely agree, that's why I value good faith argument so much. I feel like half the political, philosophical, or religious discussions I get into are with people who are unwilling to risk their positions or change their mind. As long as terms are defined and we're both willing to change our minds, argument is incredibly valuable imo and has helped me through some really garbage beliefs (my little ass was a young earth creationist once lmao)

I'd actually say phil was a remarkably useful undergrad choice! I'm working as an archeologist right now, with only a minor in anthro, and I have never once regretted being trained in critical thinking. At least in the states phil majors do better than most of the other humanities. Chess is a pretty funny fallback though, I'll give you that

And I actually think the podcast realm is a great resource for pop intelligentsia. Dan Carlin interviewed Sam Harris on his podcast (he also does Hardcore History which is fantastic) and he made Sam look like he didn't know what he was talking about. I don't really go to podcasts for philosophy I guess, but maybe if I were a history major I wouldn't go to podcasts for history either lol

Agreed, trying to consume text books of shit that takes years to decipher and analyze properly, then writing a lenghty term paper refuting or examining said ideas is wayyyyy less enjoyable
