I will say though, I think the production of Damage was perfect for what that album was. It perfectly suited the intimate and personal nature of the lyrics. It didn't serve the individual songs very well musically, but it served the album's overarching objective. I feel that was a risk that paid off for me, but didn't pay off for most other people.

the feels I get from each version of Get It Right are completely different. The vocal performance is also completely different feels

Yeah agreed. That's why I'm glad there are two versions because they serve two very different purposes and therefore each have their place. Are they in the same key? I feel like the acoustic version might be in a higher key but could be imagining that. Don't feel like the vocals get as high in the chorus of the album version.

I know you're going to hate me for this opinion, but I feel like a lot of what I don't like about Invented is the lyrics. And this song really reminds me of Invented lyrically. The album Invented that is, not the song, nor any specific lyrics... just the way he is writing. Lots of metaphors and unrhyming verses or something. I like it when Jim writes lyrics where it doesn't sound like he is "trying", if that makes sense? Could also be the lower register of his singing in the verses that reminds me of Invented, as I don't feel like he really sung in that key up until Heart is Hard to Find.

I think a lot of this is simply personal idiosyncrasies of mine that isn't necessarily reflective of the quality of the music itself.

Loving the artworks of the 3 singles so far, by the way:

It does have Invented vibes for sure

be honest tho the lyrics on Damage weren't a step up at all like "there are some things you should never have never known about no never known about no never know"

That's what I'm saying kind of, when I say I like it when Jim sounds like he isn't really "trying" with his lyrics. When it feels like it's just coming from the heart and sometimes it might come out quite basic but that's also what makes it relatable.... because I'm also quite basic lol. I like Jim's lyrics when they feel "reachable" and human.

Saying that, one of my favourite lyrics he's done is on Evidence:

"I watched you put on a dress I'd never seen; something that begged for East Atlantic breeze"

Hearing that lyric for the first time is one of the quickest my mind has ever jumped into painting a really vivid picture to go along with the music.

yeah but that line is just kinda weak and it's not the only one. i do really like 'of everything to say it's the truth that really hurts/but how could that be worse?' to reciprocate there

There is almost not a single metaphor on the whole of Damage. It's very basic and relatable and straight from the heart and to the point. I think that's what I always tend to like. I'm not much of a fan of poetic writing and never have been.

The thing with Damage is you can imagine a dumb, naive teenager who has just had his heart broken screaming out the lyrics. When things get too deep or metaphorical or intellectual, then it becomes harder to imagine the lyrics being a realistic and natural response a normal human would have to heartbreak.

Does that make sense? I'm not trying to make excuses for Damage but I genuinely do think that all those raw and personal aspects of Damage's sound and lyrics just coalesce to something close to perfection for me. And I am very, very aware of how easy it is to take Damage under a microscope and absolutely rip it apart. But I choose to throw away the microscope. Hey look I made a metaphor :D :P

I can picture a heartbroken dude screaming at his girlfriend "there are some things you should never have ever known about!" I think it works for the character being portrayed. I don't think it's about sounding smart or anything, it's just how the character reacts to the situtation.

But I take your point. I think it works but like I said I wouldn't argue that there's much sophistication to Damage.

I'd argue that "Maybe you're just bad at cheating or there's something in your heart you wished I knew" is one of the best lines of Jim's career. But I could go on and on picking 10, 20 or 30 lines of lyrics in Damage that hit me straight in the gut.

Edit: sorry for the multiple posting, I tend to do that when new thoughts keep coming to me that I want to write down in the discussion. Too excited to use the edit function or wait until I've said everything before hitting submit lol.

Invented appeals to me because each song is its own little story and there's so much more diversity in there. the imagery in Evidence, Movielike, Coffee and Cigarettes is incredible

I can totally see that. Like I said I love that line in Evidence and I think if I opened myself up to the album a littlre more then other imagery would likely start to emerge. But I don't want to force that. I think there are a lot of good lyrics on Invented but for every good lyric there's a bad one. Littlething has some absolutely beautiful, incredibly vivid lyrics, but then the chorus comes around with "It's just a little thing buried in the other things" that kind of deflates the beautiful picture that the verses conjured.

Edit: In fact if it weren't for the lyrics in the chorus, I'd be confident in saying Littlething is Jimmy Eat World's best song. #1. The lyrics in the verses are top notch and the instrumental composition is among the most beautiful they've done. It comes close to Be Sensible quality. Gives me a similar vibe too.

(Be Sensible is Jimmy Eat World's best song, sorry 23)

The verses altogether on Littlething. Man, that song is so, so close to being their best song. And it does feel like Jimmy Eat World 100%. I know I go on about them sounding like "them" and all that vague shit that I say to give me an excuse to slag off CTL and Invented without saying anything of substance.... but Littlething is a song that is completely "exempt" from that. Movielike as well, that sounds like "them" to me, even though I don't like the chorus.

Invented is one of JEW's best records lyrically imo, tons of that really vivid imagery. I can understand the complaints of it not being as relatable/interpretable on a surface level, but there's still a bunch to dig into. When JEW have been doing the generally ambiguous relationship music as long as they have, it was a very nice change of pace, whereas Damage to me oddly felt more like going back to basics despite its conceptual linear narrative.
