This album wouldn't make my top 100 albums of the year and I've only listened to 70 albums this year.

"Matt releasing a solo album so soon too has me a bit worried."
always annoys me how musicians who cant play one instrument will self-title their shit and call it "solo". like bitch, all you did was sing, you cant name a project after yourself if thats all you do.

Yeah, how dare he make some thing happen and then take credit for it. Now, if he'd strummed some chords, totally different story.

where did i say he shouldnt take credit, dipshit?
"Now, if he'd strummed some chords, totally different story."
yeah, actually, because then he could have written a record himself, and therefore justified titling the project with his own name. if all you can do is sing, youre going to be relying heavily on other people's creativity to get it done and therefore should probably come up with a band name.

Um, am I in the twilight zone? That sounds like you're saying he can't take the credit.

how is not naming a project after yourself = not taking credit? when youre in a band and your band has a name thats not just a persons name, is no one in the band taking credit? the fuck are you talking about? i just think youre not justifying naming the project after yourself when all youve done is sing on it and let the musicians take care of the rest.

Maybe wait to see who wrote the songs? Like maybe someone just transcribed what he did? It's not like bands tack the producer's name in the title when the producer arranges.

it doesnt sound that way, according to Rolling Stone the songs were "produced and arranged" by someone else.

And I've never released an album (god forbid with my basic guitar playing), I just think it's pretty elitist to be down on someone for not playing an instrument. As if making a melody with your voice isn't "playing an instrument".

Yes buddy, arranged doesn't necessarily mean writing the songs.

I'm not arguing against points, I'm commenting on the bias inherent in your statements.

nah, youre actually just not understanding what im trying to say regardless of how clear i try to make it. how about this:
with one of my musical endeavors, all i do is sing and write some of the lyrics over tracks my collaboration buddy comes up with. i would feel like a huge douche to ever suggest, "hey, we should just name this whole thing after me, even though all i did was come in and sing over something that was already there." im not downplaying my own involvement. i put a lot of thought into the lyrics and vocal melodies and ways that the songs are sung (i say this to show im not trying to put Matt down for "only" being a singer, i love the guy). but my partner is doing most of the work. it's much more creatively demanding and time consuming to do what he's doing. it takes much more skill. he's the main songwriter, so how would putting that music out under my own name ever make sense? how could i call that a "solo" album? it wouldnt feel right when someone else put so much work into it, more than i did.

and yeah actually, that is likely what that means.

Well, who is making assumptions about the facts now? Because as it stands, arrangement and songwriting ain't the same thing.

seems unlikely that someone who cant play an instrument could write a whole album, i cant even imagine what that process would be like. do you think he hummed and made guitar noises and little bleep bloops into a recorder and brought the whole album that way to the producer? i suppose its possible, but either way the producer still likely had a heavy hand in the creative process.

and now to partially debunk my own argument, if youre a singer or a hip hop artist and youre kind of moving around to different producers to collaborate with, i suppose it makes sense to just release it under your own name for the sake of simplicity. maybe thats what Matt is doing.

Went to a music store the other day and for some reason I figured it'd be a good idea to fork out a tenner on this instead of £13 on Ghosteen. One of the worse decisions of the year so far.
