the "sweetener" refrain is pretty silly but the huge-sounding chords (and subtle differences in energy b/w refrain and verse, which are the same chords) during the "i like the way..you lick..the bowl" etc. verses (which are also silly) are fucking awesome. the chromatic upward movement during the lyric "come through with the sweetener" used to bother me as a melodic cliche but now it doesn't so much. great song

i wish the bass lick in Motive was beefed up a bit because it's fucking danke but it doesn't punch through the mix as hard as i'd like

someone needs to make a video edit of Just Like Magic where when Ariana says "middle finger to my thumb and then i snap it" and it pauses for a beat they replace the finger snap with perfectly timed footage/audio of someone blowing their fucking brains out cuz thats how it makes me feel

I mean Sweetener has "some" elements of good quality things in the song, but it's overall an abomination, the chorus is good, it's actually one of my favorite parts of the album, but everything surrounding it is pretty painful

You'll either love him or hate him, there is no in between.

Have you seen anything of his? Kids?

nope, not even Kids, although I've certainly seen some of it (a long time ago) and it's constantly on my list. my film-crit mentor likes Kids, Ken Park, and Bully a lot, so I'll visit them eventually

I'd recommend watching kids. If it makes you sick to your stomach or gives you any other such knee jerk reaction just stop there. If it haunts you in a good way watch Bully next and go from there.

Ken Park kinda sucks compared to the rest of his movies I've seen tbh. Wassup Rockers is cool but less challenging than kids and bully. Relatively light hearted.

You ever check Tsai Ming-liang? Slow movies, but The River and Wayward Cloud are spectacularly sickening in what I suspect is a similar way
