An extension of a melody or riff to create atmosphere is hardly tedious imo especially when it comes to an album trying to give off a haunting vibe. They pepper in the surprises and create tension with these spurts that just pummel and stab you at random. I also don't agree about the vocals being monotone he does the drab sounding vocals to fit the mood and incorporates shouts, breathing, moans and shrieks in a way that pairs well with the spasms of the instrumentals.
