So what exactly is it that makes this album so dull, uninspiring and badly written? I've seen that form of generic comment in many pages of various NeO albums but it's always just that comment and no musical justification. Why is it so shit? So many others think otherwise, I'm just interested.

I wouldn't say its dull or shit. This somewhat iterates on the sound of the debut. I'd say this band has created a personal sound which is something rare and puts em above most metal bands. But like most metal bands, the relience on riffs holds em back. (In this case generic melo which can be very boring like in as icycles fall)
Bare in mind im saying this as someone who has listened to this album allot in the past (an old fave) and had a rare change in opinion.It deserves a re-visit I guess but that's been my conclusion in recent memory.

Personally I don't like it mainly for the reason there is little in the music that actually pulls me in. I'm not much of a fan of the clean vox here as I feel they're lacking a bit of "oomph" and I find the growling to be rather dull. I don't think any of the riffs are all that memorable and the violin arrangements don't really engulf me in their atmosphere. I generally lose interest halfway through the songs.
I do get why others would love this, of course and obviously this is all a personal subjective take of mine. I'm not much of a fan of that neo-proggy metal these days. The vibes these bands create don't really stick with me. I guess generally speaking I'm more of a cro-magnon who either wants to tear shit up or who wants to feel like a sack of shit.

I guess so even though they don't really have any of the "extreme metal" elements of for instance Ne Obliviscaris, BtBaM, Intronaut...
I don't like Leprous and Haken either. Just doesn't gel with me.
