“The intro riff to "pull me under" is a ripoff of "welcome home sanitarium" by Metallica and thats based and a fact."
Lars should sue them

I thought ripoffs were supposed to sound at least semi-like the originals.

Not in Lars's case

This album just fulls me with joy. Knowing hos saddening I thought O tavarium and Systematic Chaos were, this is a true return to form for the boys.

Nah, that was a stupid rating left over from my "It's not fast and Br00taL" days. Has been fixed. Generally going through my ratings and fixing a lot of stuff with my refined tastes now hahah. Probably well over half of my ratings are well outdated.

This is the most frustrating Dream Theater album for me to revisit - there are segments of A Nightmare To Remember and Count of Tuscany that are up there as some of the strongest material the band has ever written imo. (The entire softer middle segment of Nightmare in particular is absolutely gorgeous).
But then, you’ve got two by the numbers and average tracks in Rite of Passage and Wither, an overly Saccharine and overblown Spirit of the Radio ripoff in The Best of Times, and Shattered Fortress, which is just a cobbled together mess of segments of the first four tracks of the AA suite.
Guess that’s Dream Theater for you, though.

Idk man, The Shattered Fortress is such a great Finale. It takes these parts from earlier songs and twists them a little. It's really satisfying

I think my problem with it is how on the nose it feels. The first three tracks of the suite built up a few themes and motifs that got either repurposed or revisited in effective ways in between new musical themes. Shattered Fortress is pretty much exclusively composed of those regurgitated themes and motifs until the “I AM RESPONSIBLEEE” climax at the end. It could have been handled much more adeptly in my opinion, but again, you could say that about much of their output.

The Count of Tuscany is a top-10 DT song for me

Agreed. It's long as hell but I've never found it to get boring at any point.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks this. It’s the only 12-step song that you can’t really listen to in isolation because it relies way too much on the other songs in the suite, which tends to hurt the flow of this album

This is the best they sounded in quite a long time. James unfortunatley doesn't look too healthy but his voice sounds great, hitting the notes almost with ease. He looks and sounds like he's having a great time on stage again. Very glad to hear his voice in such great shape, and I really hope he's doing fine and has no health issues.

Is this from the last live album? It's a good live album, but James' voice is just fucked. He somehow learned a technique that allows him to hit the notez, but sounds super bright, almost like a lazer beam. Also he sounds not too bad in his lower registers though, the highs are ridiculous though.
He sounds good according to the curcumstances, let's agree on that. Since it's an official release we can't be too sure how much was edited though. Cell phone recordings might be more representative of his stage performance
