gotta agree with Hans on that one. probably not my favorite (currently at least, it's always up there but that's really a rotating spot), but if I had to pick one that was their overall "best" that's what I'd choose.

My user name does not intentionally refer to a beer, I know which one you mean, though. Also you are not being an ass. To answer your previous question, according to Wikipedia (yeah, I know, not always the best source of information) ''a song is a composition for voice or voices, performed by singing.'' Depends on whether rapping would be considered singing. Not much point in this kind of argument anyway.
EDIT: @ Inveigh

I think some are sentimental value, Phantom Lord was actually one of the first Metallica songs I ever heard, and it's still beast when I listen today. I find the solo from Fight Fire With Fire fits the music so well.

Ride the Lightning is actually the only Metallica I still listen to all the way through.

it's been a long time since I've actually listened to any Metallica, considering I played the shit out of all their albums basically from age 13 through 20. I still play some of my favorites from time to time, but yeah I've heard every song hundreds of times so there's not much of a point anymore.

I know what you mean Inveigh. I made my username so long ago it's become standard for everything, everyone assumes I'm a Metallica fanboy. I haven't listened to them for a while.

the best piece of music they ever wrote from an instrumentation standpoint is Master of Puppets. From the Godly riff, to the amazingly gorgeous slow section, to the kick ass solo, to the tempo change back to heavy, and then the Godly riff again.
I disagree. It is an enjoyable song. However, the problem with that song is its incoherence. The clean section is truly beautiful, but it is somewhat random in the context of the song. There is basically no musical connection between said section and the parts of the song that precede it. And apart from the clean section you have a fairly generic and boring song structure. The second solo is not that good either.

I like these ballad songs Metallica has, like Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and Fade to Black.
