While you've done very well to write a review that seems well reasoned and logical, you're still missing the point of this album entirely. Yes, VOL. 4 IS a fairly dreary record, but there are plenty of people who can relate to emotions this music can evoke. I personal responded to the frankness of Geezer's lyrics, which discussed his thoughts on the human condition and religion. I can remember listening to this at age 14 and feeling very comforted by the fact that someone else saw the world much in the same way that I did. And the message wasn't to go out and worship the devil, as some boneheads would have you believe. It was as simply as "the only person you can count on is yourself." Their early albums were all sort of an expose about man made evils, including war, drugs, materialism, religion, etc.
Tony's down tuned riffs are plain bone crushing on songs like "Under The Sun" and "Cornucopia". As a guitarist, I can quite easily get off on most of these songs. I believe the whole sludge metal genre benefited from the creation of this album.
I'll concede that it isn't as good as the first 3 records, but it's hardly a godawful 1.5 star release! VOL. 4 was a transitional record that has some moments of experimentation and self indulgence, but there the vibe is still very much vintage Black Sabbath. I was never in love with "Tomorrow's Dream" either, but "Snowblind" is classic.
When I'm reading a review about the original lineup, I don't want to see Dio's name anywhere in the article. I love Ronnie too, but let's keep this in context. Comparing these lineups is as helpful as telling me why you think apples are better than oranges.
