I don't get that either, I don't understand how you can get stuck on bands like Lamb of God, Devil Driver, or FFDP and not instantly take it that extra step forward to heavier stuff once you hear it. Once I heard amon amarth and strapping young lad all of that other stuff just seemed outclassed, not that I dislike it now or am shitting on it, but the heavier stuff just seemed so much more powerful.

^I think you missed the point, pretty sure Benkin meant close minded in terms of vocals styles common to other genres of music that many metalheads will dismiss. Plus those weren't the best examples man, amon amarth is more melodic then heavy, in fact I'd say lamb of god were heavier on their early albums (especially Burn the Priest )

ok that's not THAT much, but still too much. The Mantle is basically perfect!

Very pretty I'll admit, but I swear 90% of it was the same set of melancholy guitar chords. This at least has more diversity going for it

the band kinda collectively wore off of me so it's hard to argue

So you think this is more diverse than The Mantle? That's interesting, never saw it that way. The Mantle has more changes from loud to quiet, while this maintains that mid-tempo feeling most of the time. I guess we just pay attention to very different things.

Yeah I think so. The genre I probably listen to most is electronica, so I guess when I speak of diversity I am primarily talking about diversity of texture. In that regard, this album is a decent step above and beyond The Mantle

ok, I guess that's comprehensible. The Mantle is more diverse in terms of atmosphere though, and also shifts between genres fairly often. Odal for example is a post rock instrumental followed by a Bergtatt-like black metal song and then The Lodge is straight-up folk without any electric distortion, that 3-track-run alone has just as much stylistic diversity as this as a whole tbh.
But all in all I just think that both albums are very different in the way they are meant to be approached, if you get what I mean. This is more of an album with a certain vibe and groove, developing textures, while The Mantle has more of a "story-telling" aspect/soundtrack feeling to it. I just think they can't be compared that well - which is, by the way, one of the things I love most about Agalloch.

Even with those stylistic shifts, The Mantle somehow retains more or less the same flavour for me throughout
