You don't need a doctorate in metal to mark the differences.
Just l-i-s-t-e-n.

"yeah to people who have listened to hours upon hours of slayer and can pick up the nuances"
I never understood why people still believe this. Slayers first 5 albums are unique to one another and offer something new to their sound. You can argue that their stuff after 1991 sounds the same, but I don't think you can make a decent argument saying that their first 5 albums sound the same. Slayer was on fire duirng the 80's.

i agree that their first 5 albums differ from each other......but for the user who didn't get Reign In Blood, perhaps trying South Of Heaven or Seasons In The Abyss would be the answer.....those are their 2 most accessible albums imo

maybe apart from "Hell Awaits", all of their first five albums are accessible thrash imo

How is this album 30 years old? Very impressed with how well it holds up. 'Angel of Death' is such an awesome opener. Are all early Slayer records this fast/heavy? (I'm won't say 'this good' because that'll just be down to personal preference).

South of Heaven is generally slower and the debut sounds little more like NWOBHM, but it's stiil an awesome speed/thrash record. And definitely check Hell Awaits it's their best album imo.

The beginning of Divine Intervention is fun. Here, have 12 riffs for starters.
