I get how the themes are similar, but that's called "cohesive," not "concept."

agree Torts, to a certain point, they sound dated for sure, when they came out actually sounded fresh believe it or not, but easy to sound better than the hair band shite

"I get how the themes are similar, but that's called "cohesive," not "concept."

Niggaz be getting all semantic up in here. A concept album (according to wiki) is "a studio album unified by a larger purpose or meaning to the album collectively than to its songs individually. This may be achieved through a single central narrative or theme, or through a sense of artistic cohesiveness." (emphasis added)

Now I'm not saying GnR planned AfD as a concept album, but it certainly plays like one because the songwriting and thematic coherence of the songs on the album actually create an implied character (probably Axl himself) and gives him a character arc that develops over the course of the album.

Act I: The Party

Welcome to the Jungle ->It's So Easy->Nightrain->Out ta Get Me

The protagonist, a small town hick moves to the big city and despite the ominous introduction finds that life is a party. Girls, Booze, Drugs he partakes in it all, and despite the run ins with the cops is having the time of his life.

Act II: The Downward Spiral and False Euphoria

Mr. Brownstone -> Paradise City -> Think about you -> Sweet Child o' Mine

The party turns sinister with the protagonist moving from garden variety shenanigans to harder stuff ie heroin. He starts to get sick of life in the big city and gets homesick but finds what he thinks is redemption in who he thinks is the love of his life.

Act III: Crashing Into Reality and Resolution

You're Crazy -> Anything Goes -> Rocket Queen

Turns out love isn't enough to save him and his paramour. He gets clean but realises that she has her own demons and he can't save her from them. He then buries himself in pussy, basically swapping one addiction for another. Eventually however, he learns to accept her, himself, and the people around him for who they are and finds some kind of peace, even if it isn't an idealised notion of happiness.

The only song that doesn't really work as a chapter that drives this narrative arc is My Michelle, but hey, it's not a perfectly edited screenplay. It still works way better than similar attempts at telling this story like Extreme II: Pornograffiti and it's a much more compelling story than one about some gimp playing pinball.

Wow...stupid review there. 2 ? Really ? I mean, were you even alive when this came out ? The rest of their work is pretty much crap (use your illusion was barely ok) but this is a masterpiece and a cult album for a reason. You might not like it or think it's overrated but it definitely doesn't deserve a 2. Anything under 3.5 is underrating.

"The rest of their work is pretty much crap (use your illusion was barely ok)"

You gave Use Your Illusion parts 1 and 2 a 3.0, then gave half of The Beatles discog a 2.5, Remains a 4.5, 20,000 Watt R.S.L. a 2.0, and Sad Wings of Destiny a 2.0 because you couldn't rate it lower because the shit opinion protection system was made to keep spergs like you from 1 bombing albums considered universally above a 2 at the very least. You have a very warped view on what is "barely ok."

"a cult album for a reason"
It's the 31st most selling record of all time you mong, that's far from a cult album.

Worst new user I've ever seen, or best alt I can't really tell

I was born in 1990

My favorite bands are Amebix and Acid Bath..two bands known for how emo they are...yeaaa

if not liking guns n roses makes me emo then so be it, but that might be the dumbest point of view ever conceived.
