Alcest is best, but this album brings Deafheaven closer to that level.
Also this is not just standard shoegaze or alt. rock, it's more eclectic/unique than that. Like with Melting Sun by Lantlos, since that band was just mentioned, I'd like to see someone try to name another piece of music that one could make a straight comparison with that sounds like this. It's more original than a lot of people want to give it credit for.

yeah like I (probably idk) said in the review, I think it's hard to get a good read on how much of this is the fully-realised product of original thoughts (defs not the songwriting lmao) and how much is inadvertent result of a band steeped in metal vocabulary tackling not-metal things for the first time proper. is it originality or is it residual baggage in foreign ballpark hmm what a blurry line
shit sounds like an easily possible lovechild between Envy and Nothing, say, and i think it's p easy to pick out other influences at leisure

hard to compare it to just one thing, just a very tired sound with very not dynamic songs that just feel very hollow. possibly most comparable to the surprise alt rock hundredth album. also lacks any element of surprise

The closest thing I could compare it to would be The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place but with actual vocals over it. But Lantlos, Nothing, AFI, The Smiths, nah. All those aren’t even close in terms of sound.

enough of a red flag that no further comparisons are warranted tbh

shoulda been one page of fanboys saying "not as good as their old stuff but enjoyed it!" and haters saying "wow this sucks, how far they've fallen!" for all it's worth
