I listened to about 40 mins of it the other day... I do enjoy Maynard's voice more on this one!
But it all sounds like Tool making another Tool album. So fans will be pleased! I'm still left with something missing, something fresh. Will check out the rest later!
Hoping they will release a "just CD" package because I don't have 80$ to put in their awesome package...

I’m one of those people that immediately considered 10,000 Days their most superior album, just for perspective. (It still is.)
Wow. 10k Days is phenomenal, but it’s still only number 4 in their discog imo. But it’s all good. I adore the album, you adore the album, so we’re in agreement there.
But for you and Source — this album is a huge grower. It can sound kinda Sandy the first few times, even half dozen times — but the brilliance of it does reveal itself.
I think the 13 year build up/hype is a huge reason for some of the mixed reviews. I’m calling it now — this album will be (mostly) revered in a few years, I went through the same thing when 10k Days came out. Some people didn’t really like it, and I was wtf?! You can’t be serious. But now? Most people love that album, many even considering it to be their best (nobody, absolutely nobody, though that when it was released).
I think the FI tour and people seeing these songs live with the new stage set up/videos will turn the tables a bit.

I make the opposite bet: people will grow less and less excited about this album and it'll be considered mostly just ok

On the money. After the hype dies the mediocre reality will rise

Sounds like a Maynard lyric tbh

he actually said that on one of the interludes, but you gotta reproduce it backwards

I hate Fantano only because he influences RYM scores

I agreed with Fantano on some points, tbh. But I expected a 6 (lowest a 5) rating.

You're probably right.

10,000 Days blow this out of the water. Hell, I'd take every other Tool album over this in a heartbeat including Opiate and I bought those when they came out. There's not a single memorable song on this thing it's one long smoked out jam band session and honestly it's boring even for Tool standards.

Descending is better than anything made on 10k

Honestly, I think this would have been better if the band produced it themselves like they did on 10,000 Days and just let Barresi mix it. He tends to make the music sound too thin and "dull", if that makes sense. I don't think it's just the songwriting that is throwing people off here. These songs work better in a live environment, but they should have played a bit more with the production.
I downloaded all of the remastered discography from itunes and pretty much all of the other records sound so much better than this (even Undertow which sounded so thin on the original version).

I don’t know about better but pretty equal to Jambi, Wings for Marie Part 2 and Rosetta Stoned. But regardless, this is definitely the better album.

Production is bone dry here, especially the toms suffer from it.

THANK YOU. Yes, there's no surprise why Danny was actually hesitant to let Barresi produce this. He puts a lot of focus on the guitar but takes away the punch of the rhythm section. Terrible choice when you don't even have a rhythm guitar.
