"Damn, just found out the song "It's Only Smiles" is about the death of Spencer's older sister."
Hmm, it's weird. The rest of the band is taking the piss and here Spencer is writing heartfelt shit. At the same time, he's not a great lyricist because half the time you have no idea what he's saying let alone what the song is about.

He did an interview with Revolver where he talks about his writing process. I guess he plans vocal melodies, then syllables, then he fits words to what he envisions. I'd agree, he isn't the best lyricist, but thinking about how he writes songs it makes sense. His melodies are awesome, but I wouldn't say he's a poet. At least he's heart-felt though.

I'm a huge fan of his vocals but yeah his lyrics are generally pretty nonsensical.

They're super cryptic, I bet each line has some hidden meaning behind it

Hidden because the the words themselves don't often make sense.

Is it too much of a stretch to call Sotelo the Kurt Cobain of prog lyricists then?

"Is it too much of a stretch to call Sotelo the Kurt Cobain of prog lyricists then?"
I mean, most of Cobain's lyrics were scribbled down ad hoc and are a pretty direct insight into a v discontented psyche (I mean - Milk It???) so probs yes
