yeah new song is kinda weak... biggest disappointment for me is that insipid guitar chug throughout the
song

If Cusp sounds generic, who or what does it sound like? It sounds like Heritage era Opeth just with more classic metal influences with a dash of Ghost Reveries. Is it because it's relatively short and simplistic in structure?
Well loads of people have said it sounds like (modern) DT so there's that. But mainly it's generic for Opeth, it's about as simplistic as Opeth could sound and is structured like many other conventional rock songs, compared to songs like Haxprocess, Nepenthe, Folklore etc. it sounds like Popeth, not that that's a bad thing in itself. Generic isn't really an out and out criticism when used on its own as a song could be generic but at the same time be brilliantly well written but that's not the case with Cusp imo, it's just bland and musically uninteresting.

Nice analysis, Jamie. Agreed. Plus, the title is bad ass. You can't name a song Cusp of
Eternity and then not bring the riffs.

Solo is definitely DT-esque. I thought it was still quite a solid track nonetheless. It's the single so I assume that it would have a traditional verse chorus verse structure so that doesn't surprise me at all. It's alright, and that's as far as it goes

the song is good but didn't have me dropping trou and having a wank or anything. hopefully there are a couple songs on PC that will have that effect on me. every opeth album has at least a couple of those (besides heritage and orchid)

New song is great. Not amazing but a really solid single. And as I said, better than anything on Heritage.

Sweet. It's not bad by any means, but it's nothing too special either

yeah i'm not worried about the album at all. single has got me pumped tbh, but we're all over-
analyzing here so don't get in the way of the over-analyzation by saying the same exact thing ("every
reviewer has said...") that everyone else keeps saying
not to be a dick...i'm just cranky this morning. need more coffee

Haha no I get what you are saying.

I don't really listen to modern DT so I didn't notice the similarities. To me the song sounds like a stripped down, rockin' Opeth song and would probably sound much better in the context of the album (perhaps coming after a behemoth opening track Eternal Rains Will Come).
