That first Slipknot album felt like times were changing, like we were going to get serious about musicianship again. His work was spectacular.
I'm bummed about this. I'll always be pissed at myself for not making it to one of their shows before he was out of the band.

That little drum break right before the second verse in Duality is one of my all time favorite music moments tbh. Dude could sporadically throw double bass into his grooves as well as anyone.

Hard RIP. One of my favorite metal albums of all time, and so much of it is based around how fucking hard Joey went on every song.

Realistically I wonder where he lands on the metal drummer GOAT list. It's kind of tough to comprehend while the band is still active, and I'm not a drummer, but considering their popularity and how clearly influential he was, he's gotta land pretty fucking high.

His passing will bias it a bit. I've always kinda seen him as the Travis Barker of the metal scene. Clearly very talented, but over-represented by the intersection of said talent and being a more mainstream band. No doubt super influential to a lot of people though.
Up against the greatest metal drummers, I'm not so sure how he'd place. I've always hated the competitive nature of the "greatest" musician discussions in any case.

Without these guys, who knows if I would've got into the heavier side of music?
Have Joey and the lads to thank for opening that door for me m/

Emim yeah I hear that. I'd heard him described as needlessly busy by drummers before, but that's kinda just slipknot in general lol.
Those convos are always difficult anyway, for the reasons you alluded to and more. Musicianship vs. impact and all that.
Regardless, in a vacuum, off the cuff....dude is easily top 10 for me.

Pretty much what Em said in regards to his standing all time. There's more technically proficient dudes out there for sure but Joey was THE guy every metal kid wanted to play like for the past 20+ years. His playing was just so fucking pummeling and fast and loud and totally over the top... just the perfect guy for what they did... and he brought Slipknot a certain respect and credibility among musicians/players that they might not have ever gotten otherwise. Your old-enough-to-be-your-dad drum teacher who worships Buddy Rich might have thought Slipknot was a joke, but he knew Joey wasn't.

i wanted to be able to play like joey so bad when i was a kid, he was pretty much the reason i got into heavy music

Joey had style, man. His playing was distinct and added a lot to Slipknot's sound, and that's something that's far more important than technical skill.
People like to add the whole "there are more technical drummers out there, but" qualifier, but... idk man, Joey had chops too
