I like Dodecahedron. They have a couple of songs that add to the style for sure.

Dodecahedron's self titled is decent, but to be honest it's nowhere near as good as this.

"none of the bands that copy this have any substance"

maybe there are some exceptions, but from my experience this is so true

This is very quickly becoming one of my favourite albums of all time. Been listening to pretty much nothing except this album for the last month and it honestly blows my mind every time.

Sometimes I think about something with this band, how in the hell did they become known? the members never revealed who they were and they never performed live yet somehow we are here talking about them. I wonder what it was like for them when they started out. What made people notice them? They made records but who bought them and how did they even know they existed?

"how in the hell did they become known?"

Well they always had label backing and promotion, so that helps. Mostly tho it's cause they transformed the blueprint laid out by Ved Buens Ende and Blut Aus Nord and solidified the technical/dissonant black metal style in the mid-2000s. A good portion of the praise they receive now is in reflection of just how influential albums like Kenose, Fas and Paracletus have turned out to be.

"What made people notice them? They made records but who bought them and how did they even know they existed?"

I haven't read into the history of the band but I imagine it went something like: band records demo, sends it to labels, sends it to hundreds of metalheads worlwide, sends it zines, etc. all those people pick it up or share it around. band gets label support and promotion and further outreach. band gets very popular. everyone buys their albums.

underground metal is far less predicated on live shows, from what i've seen. yeah, performing live probably helps, but considering all the bands in the olden daysers got their names spread through tape trading and zines, the live aspect was more for the people who already are fans.

i mean, darkthrone didn't even play any shows past the 90s really and they're one of the biggest names in black metal.

edit: also, looking back on their discography, a imagine a large portion of their fans early on found them through their early splits

lol nah, Satan recognized the humans who would appreciate this and injected the right knowledge into their souls.

But by all means, stick to your adorable word of mouth theory.

I think the band themselves would disagree with your perception of satan
