Wish they still had balls to do a drastic change again. ADToE was good for the nostalgia factor but self-titled and BC&SL are the same old shite

bc&sl is better than either of their post-portnoy albums

Why? It's a rehash of the same structure SC has. if you think SC is shitty then so does BC&SL.

umm no, bc&sl is hell of a more consistent album than sc

Liked BC&SL and ADToE
The worst ones of this band are the self titled and systematic chaos

...Really? I disagree:
A Nightmare to Remember - extended Dark Eternal Night with more annoying Portnoy (2.5)
A Rite of Passage - Costant Motion 2 (sucks like the first one) (2.5)
Wither - an even worse Forsaken (2.5)
The Shattered Fortress - the shittiest idea that ever came out of Portnoy's. It's a terrible, terrible mashup (2)
The Best of Times - best track of the cd (3.5)
The Count of Tuscany - great music, awful awful awful goddamn concept and lyrics. what the hell guys.. (3) and I'd still take The Ministry.. or the whole In the Presence of Enemies suite over the Count.

I used to love BC&SL most out of their Roadrunner Records releases, but it's pretty cheesy and about as good as SC to me now: about half greatness and half unnecessary filler. ADTOE isn't as pummeling and inspired but still my favorite since Octavarium. S/T doesn't really do anything for me anymore and grew off me after a few months.

"Wither - an even worse Forsaken"
Seriously? I can't even make it through Forsaken. I find BC&SL definately better than Octvarium and SC, but I don't touch DT pre Scenes anymore.

all those bc&sl ones beat their sc counterparts. i notice some similarities but come fucking on forsaken is the worst shit ever (not a fan of wither either tho) and a rite of passage doesn't remind me of constant motion in the slightest, which is a good thing because constant motion is a terrible, terrible song
the first half of count of tuscany makes me cringe hard but the second half is one of the best things they've ever made (if we don't take the lyrics to count)

Well, yeah - CM and DEN are really two bad songs. I'd rate them both 2.5 and put them on a similar level to their counterparts. Rite and Constant have a similar development (based on the same riff for the first half, lackluster chorus, 4 minutes of typical DT wankery each with back-to-back rudess and petrucci solos) and they were both singles so that's why it makes me easy to compare them.
What I don't forgive in BC&SL is that, for the first time, DT rehashed their previous disc. They've never done it, each disc tried something differently, some better some worse, but they at least tried to bring something 'new' to the table. In BC&SL, they even closed a 8 year lasting project with one of the stupidest tracks of all times - a mash-up that's insulting to all the 4 tracks before and that's just plain laziness.
We could say that the most important difference between SC and BC&SL is that SC came out first. That's why I rate it higher.

"The Count of Tuscany - great music, awful awful awful goddamn concept and lyrics. what the hell guys.. (3) and I'd still take The Ministry.."
I've always considered Ministry to be their most pointlessly lenghty and lame epic. I mean, it contains basically every element that makes me dislike SC so much; a cheesy, overlong first part and an incredibly boring riff-fest. Maybe that's just me, but I find it hard to get through all 15 minutes of it.
Even comparing BC&SL and SC as wholes, I'd take the former. Both are pretty bland and formulaic, but Black Clouds has some kind of melodic qualities and a bit less wankery. It also has its share of terrible songs (A Rite of Passage and most importantly The Shattered Fortress), but Prophets of War, Forsaken, Ministry and The Dark Eternal Night just seem less inspired to me.

The Ministry is good if they'd cut off the wankfest in the middle. Completely unneccessary.

Ministry and Repentance would've been their best ballads in over a decade if they had just stopped after the first 5-6 minutes of each song, even if I don't mind the end of Ministry

It's completely average. Two ballads are a no, the instrumental is their worst instrumental ever. Single was cool but I don't remember the other three songs like at all
