This band is worse than BTBAM and that's saying something.

I think the schtick of djent is largely played out and I don't look for new bands in that style anymore but the meat of the established "primo" djent bands I'm still actively a fan of, eg. Tesseract, Animals as Leaders, Periphery, Meshuggah, and Erra. The Veil of Maya's and After the Burial's of the world used to do it for me but now I find them pretty boring outside of the handful of albums I dug 5-8 years ago.

My main issues with black metal are that it seems like there's so little variation in the sound and the things that black metal fans hold up as gospel are the things that make it unlistenable to me, eg. intentionally shitty production, the same themes/tropes, sloppy playing, monotonous songs. Obviously this is only based on the sample size of bands I've heard and tried over the years, so it's not the most comprehensive opinion, but that style just doesn't do anything for me. Djent has a lot of regurgitated concepts and motifs too, but that's a big factor in why I don't seek that sound out anymore.

The other major thing is that black metal just seems to take itself so fucking seriously, lol. A positive that I can absolutely give Periphery is that they do seem to genuinely be having fun doing this, hence why their album titles are stupid and they meme in their song titles. They can bust out "real" songs when they feel like it but without having to put on this tough-guy/"kvlt" attitude that I hate in metal. Most of these dudes are total dweebs anyway so at least I don't feel like there's some facade being put on, which does help the bands generally seem more approachable and less try-hard.
