BrushedRed gets it, nice analogy as valek said. This is like the nocturnal, moody sibling of Sunbather and I even think this is slightly better.

Eh… It’s a fine shoegaze album. That’s about it. It’s about on par with their non-Sunbather albums. Really don’t know what they tapped into with that one because aside from a few tracks nothing else they’ve done remotely touches it. At least their other albums aren’t so predictable.

this thread is throwing shoegaze around quite a bit to describe this album

You got a better descriptor for it? I find it hard to believe that this album came out in any way other than Deafheaven actively deciding to go full gaze.

i honestly just don't hear it. the only blend is when the crescendos come to their summit and the production sorta turns to soup lol

i would say this was more similar to post-Crash Love AFI than idk the thousands of shoegaze bands out there

What so it’s just dream pop then? There’s certainly a lot of that too I guess (I mean the two practically come hand in hand), I just feel the guitar sound is more often in the gaze realm.

i think the gaze argument is reliant on the guitars honestly, cuz nothing else here really hits me as it. it's really just his vocals that stick out IMO (i fucking love them, don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Davey Havok fan and there's definitely imitation there), if they were just pushed back just a pinch, god what could've been
but ya man idk. this shit just sounds like alt-rock to me lmao

I mean shoegaze is a type of alt rock so that’s not too wild. Certainly the production is more hi-fi than a lot of gaze but a lot of the riffs and textures (especially in the first few tracks) are like as textbook gaze as you can get. As for the other instruments, yeah the drumming and bass work certainly are a bit unusual for gaze I guess but I don’t think that’s disqualifying. I mean there is still some personality here, it definitely sounds how I would have expected Deafheaven’s take on shoegaze to sound if that makes sense.

yeah can we go back to talking about how this is baby post rock and foo fighters tributes plz

bro the first 4 songs here are honestly immaculate. the flow is just perfect.
a lot of the songs are just hella predictable, which is whatever, but simultaneously feel really disjointed. the drummer is laying it down technically, the guitar and bass are gazey af (thank god they abandoned those shitty 3 min chug riffs and wawa solos), his vocals lmao idk dude im high af, fucking foo fighter-ish i guess

I mean this ain’t bad, my ears like what they hear it just doesn’t grab me a whole ton, easily at least a 3. But I don’t think I’ll feel the need to go back to this in favor of thousands of other things in a similar enough vein.

if you give this the same rating as highvision i will defecate in your shoutbox

did the Shelter v Infinite Granite argument happen already?

it was on and off and never really turned into an argument iirc

well i see myself bumping this to a 4 eventually, but I have Shelter at a 4 and I don't think this is better than Shelter

Shelter better end of argument.

Album Rating: 2.0
shelter is for sure much better but also prob the worst alcest album after the newest one

Album Rating: 3.0
Technically you’re probably right but Shelter is still a wonderful work. I mean Alcest have 2-3 albums better than Sunbather and the rest are still better than all the other Deafheaven albums.
