Ring 4 is the Crash Team Racing theme song.

I kind of agree that every song is laterally complex on first blush, but I'll be damned if every song isn't fun as hell. It's whacky as hell and makes me very excited about this band again after being a bit all over the place since Act V. Extremely promising stuff. Love that they just got zany as hell with class consciousness and class warfare. Long live The Dear Hunter

Damn, not feeling the new one very much so far. I'm only two tracks in, but Ring 7 sounded like Sim City background music and I already forget what Ring 8 was like. Truly hoping this gets better in a hurry, because it would pain me to dislike anything from TDH. Even at their worst in the past, they've were still good. Ugh.

OK, Ring 5 is the first time I felt slightly jolted to life. Hopefully more of this to come.

Second half is way better than the first half imo.

Agreed. I think the first half is fun and good but it wasn't until Middle Class that I really propped up. I liked the first half more on second listen tho

I'm hoping my experience aligns with yours, Odal. Rings 8-6 breezed by and left me unimpressed, but I just finished Ring 5 and it was nice. Hopefully Rings 4-1 bring the goods and then Rings 8-6 grow on me by virtue of the strength of the rest of this thing.

That's not good to hear because Ring 4 isn't as good as I'd hoped
|

Hope you enjoy it too, but could also understand if this album doesn't gel with folks. This might be their zaniest release yet. I think there are some genuinely breathtaking moments, but there isn't, say, a Waves to hang your hat on for a reprieve.

I actually think Ring 3 is a lot of fun

I like almost everything they've done, but to me they're at their best when they fuse their rockier side with all the theatrics. This seems like it's all theatrics without any solid foundation. It feels like a Broadway play.

Rings 5 and 3 are the only ones I've enjoyed so far, but neither of them come close to top-tier TDH.

Ring 2 was okay and Ring 1 was decent as well, but neither were enough to salvage the entire experience. I'm slapping a generous 3 on it, but man what a let down. That's a new feeling coming from these guys. :-(

Ring 3 has good moments but also some big cringe moments. Hmmmm

Crazy to see the "broadway musical" criticisms when Acts 3-5 were very much just that if not more. Maybe bc of the less rock-y elements, more horns, etc? I can understand people being initially not crazy about the sound palette.

Can definitely acknowledge that I generally like them when there's more standard rock with their theatricality but this is just so much fun. The winding saxophones on Ring 1 are so damn fun. This definitely feels like a world-building album and I hope that sonically this ends up being more of a one-off experiment, but I'm digging it a lot more than most here. Still, it's clearly not one of their best. I'm somewhere between a 3 and a 3.5, but more towards a 3.5. More than anything, I'm exciting how creative this one is and how energized they sound

I'd say it was pretty good. Definitely not their best, but really fun. Gave the second half of my work day some much needed energy.
