Because he's still new and doesn't want to be too bombastic right now i think. There wasn't much creativity or many memorable grooves, but that can be said about the whole album. Now compare his performance to Jarzombeks on the last fates warning album (and his first with the group), night and day.

Meh. The songs are OK, but nothing really happens. They take no risks and the lyrics aren't good nor bad so everything is extremely forgettable. Even Illumination Theory is extremely forgettable for an epic.

"Mike did not impress at all. He can probably play with all his limbs and his nose simultaneously, but he's just too mechanical."

I perfectly agree, I think his drumming has been a major factor in the music's horrible lack of soul and passion over the years. Yet Mangini has shown even less creativity as for now - it was forgiveable in Dramatic Turn, but on this record, one couldn't expect more formulaic prog metal drumming.

Yea it was boring as hell then too and really took the music down. It worked on The Enemy Inside because that song just has that vibe to it

I miss Portnoy's ADHD-inspired m/ drum fills

@oni yeah there was little creativity, but the music was generic as well. I don't expect the next album to be interesting either.

@parallels: portnoys rehashed his fills to oblivion now. They were pretty cool in the beginning, but now they aren't refreshing for me, neither is his style overall

They hyped this record stating they had re-established themselves musically, but not only was there barely no change in the formula, but additionally the music is pretty terrible. So yeah, I have incredibly low expectations for whatever they'll come up with next.

Same here. Expecting nothing more but an even more watered down version of the toothless grampa prog rock found on this.

This is the Petrucci Show now. Features dad-rock style prog with "cool riffs".

Just same ol DT being DT. If they continue with the same old stuff they'll only get worse and worse.
