"Vinny's one of the finest vocalists out there. Such an emotive, dynamic, and powerful voice"

can be quite exhausting as well with all that melodrama

I only enjoy their newer stuff to be honest. Could never really get into the older gothic doom albums, but think they really found a really unique niche around this era.

theres a lot of bands on this site whose early output is heavily underrated in favour of more accessible later stuff

lol. I mean, it's not that I can't dig earlier less accessible material, there are a ton of bands that I enjoy their first few albums as much, oftentimes more, than the newer i.e. Katatonia, Dark Tranquillity, Amorphis, Meshuggah, but personally I don't think it's good. Has nothing to do with accessibility.

I'm kind of in the same boat, although I really love The Silent Enigma and the Pentecost III EP from their early records, the rest didn't do it for me. Eternity is basically a transitional record and Alt4 is where their mid era started peaking at Judgment imo (which is one of my favorites from them).

But man, the newer LPs starting from We're here Because We're Here are goooooooolden by one of the most unique "prog" bands of our era.

You should get on My Dying Bride ASAP, it's by far my favorite out of the early 90's gothic/death/doom (Peaceville3) bands. Can't go wrong with Turn Loose the Swans

when you go like an hour straight trying to sound as dramatic and grandiose as possible it gets really exhausting for me

I had a breakup right before Weather Systems came out. That album is a 5 on feels alone.

I agree totally with Parksung - and I am guilty of it. I can’t get into older stuff from Katatonia, Anathema, Porcupine Tree, heck even pre - BWP Opeth stuff. Probably because I got into those bands in the middle of their careers.

1990s Opeth and PT albums have some of their best songs, even if they aren't as polished and sophisticated as when Wilson and Akerfeldt started working together / got famous in the prog scene.
