" the real metal only born in the 90's with bands like Queensryche, Fates Warning and Dream Theater"
.......?"
Yeah he can't have been serious with that statement, especially seeing as those bands came around in the 80's and 2 of them got considerably softer/less metal in the 90's. Not to mention that their 90's output is about as far away from what most would consider real metal as you can get whilst staying loosely in the metal genre.

Even assuming he meant born in the 80's (which he obviously did unless he's trying to troll us), calling 3 bands that took the real metal sound that had already been long established and simply added prog elements to it the fathers of real metal is still just as laughable.

I didn't said that this is my opinion. I said that some consider it.
What I really want to say is that it isn't perfectly clear that Black Sabbath is a truly metal band. And sincerely I really can't see any band that can be considered a true metal band in the 70's.

Yeah but that's the thing, I don't think anyone considers that real metal was born in the 90's with Dream Theater, Fates Warning and Queensryche. It doesn't matter if it's your opinion or not, that's just silly. But I'm guessing you meant to say 80's in which case that was at least the birth of progressive metal (but definitely not the birth of metal).

Dude Steppenwolf is a metal band, in fact it was the first band to even be called metal since the term "metal" was taken from their biggest hit "Born to Be Wild"

I've got no real problem with people saying that about 70's bands but smaugman clearly wasn't thinking when he typed 80's as well.

I just got done teaching a lesson on how to make connections with a book. they are text to self, text to text, text to world.
this is essentially what is going on here, many people young and old do not have a text to self or text to world understanding of the context of music through the years.
meaning everything is taken at face value as you discover it, not putting the music in perspective of historic or contextual understanding. please at least study the music in its correct context; being its where and when, then if you do not like it, at least you understand why.
most people only work on the text to text side of thought and try to compare oranges with apples with little further knowledge of where they come from.
torts comment as Sabbath being boring, makes sense because he is obviously younger and heard it lumped in with other newer bands, in that context it would not sound innovative if every band he heard started at his understanding of them.
