Cocteau Twins is relatively clear compared to a lot of stuff in the vein production-wise, and somehow it seems to have gotten worse lately rather than better, but putting 1000% reverb on everything and maxing out the treble until everything turns into a unnavigable swamp of ear knives just isn't my thing
needless to say i don't think much of shoegaze either

I love her Massive Attack feats, but I feel like she holds back a lot on them because it'd be inappropriate for her to go full out belting against such a chill atmosphere
Which ultimately makes me prefer her vocals with Cocteau Twins
Both rule though, they're just very different

lol I think the restraint serves her well as some of her Cocteau performances are pretty obnoxious and borderline sounds like bard music

Its weird tho. Like take Amelia for instance, amazing song. Her performance is incredible. but she's also borderline a shrieking banshee. It might be more 'impressive' than her MA feats, but it's also less 'pretty' if that makes sense.

I fucking love Amelia
And yeah it's got that "pretty but ugly" thing going on but I mean I love that about it idk
|
| |
Haha yeah I know you would
I like/admire it as well, but it makes it more niche. Have to be in the mood. Not something I want to hear if I have a headache, especially with that production lol.

Exactly Ars, I miss that side of her too, although her Massive performances are still absolutely magical.

I do totally get this too Pots, but I love that crazy vibe so much personally. But I completely get people disliking it.

I definitely don't dislike it, it just makes it very situational for me!

Gotcha. And it wouldn't make sense at all if she'd used those deep belts in Teardrop EEEEEW!

Song is so gorgeous. Whenever I hear it I remember seeing it live (which was unbelievable) and how the audience didn't get the ending, they started applauding before it was over (just like on Roseland NYC). Devastating track.

Yeah man. And Beth's performance is out of this world. Whole concert was spectacular.
Happy I saw them twice. Beth did the whole walking-through-the-audience thing and everything. Two amazing gigs. But that's to be expected with this lot of course!

They must have been feeling overzealous about moving on to actual good portishead songs

Roads is probably the best slow ballady Portishead song
Love it
|
| |
Yeah tbh it probably is
Which still puts it in the worst tier of portishead songs tho

So I assume you don't like:
It Could Be Sweet
It's a Fire
Roads
Undenied
Mourning Air
Western Eyes
Hunter
The Rip
Deep Water
specifically? Just quickly looked through Portishead's songs to determine the ballady ones
