I recall those albums being more traditional melodeath, whereas this and Character have a heavier and riff-driven feel. I spun The Gallery again and it definitely has that lovey-dovey goth romance sound I don't vibe with. That's just not what I look for in death metal. I'm clearly in the minority tho.

Gothic might be a stretch but it just kinda plods along and doesn't stir any feelings in me whatsoever. The drums are also too loud in the mix and the overtly melodramatic lyrics make me roll my eyes. Hard pass. This on the other hand? Solid riffage, awesome production, and much more focused songwriting.

I mean this era of the band is still good of course (they're probably the one big Gothenburg melodeath band to still remain good even after their early years imo), but their first few releases, namely Skydancer and Gallery, give me more of what I like and want from melodeath so I'm naturally drawn to those more.

DT has always been one of my favorite bands but I’ve never been able to get into anything pre Haven. I think it’s mostly the rough mixes that take me out of it.
