Usually unless he's talking about something personal I try to tune Maynard out and focus on the hypnotic instrumentals

I think Descending has decent lyrics but ya, I do not listen to this for the lyrics or even the vocals at all really. Def Maynard’s weakest performance but it fits the more mediative vibe this record has

This has settled in as one of my favorite passive-listening albums. Good stuff when doing other stuff. But also I still kinda just like it generally, too.

there are some great lines and turns-of-phrase here, just overall the lyrics feel very one-dimensional for a band that used to be all about opening your third-eye and such

Not one of their best but still a brilliant album to me. All the anticipation leading up and extremely high expectations leading up to the release didn’t help. They’ll never live up to Lateralus again, lightning in a bottle. I’ve accepted that.

Exactly. Tool has never faltered imo.

Invincible and Descending. Pneuma is good too, but it does sound pretty familiar.

Yeah Descending, Invincible, 7empest and Pneuma all slap

Personally hate Pneuma and think it’s probably a bottom five tool song.
Honestly just listen to the whole thing. It’s a big bitch but it’s also only six tracks. The most aggravating thing about the album is having mid songs that have some really great parts to them. But every song has to be longer than 10 minutes for some reason so no fat got cut

This is basically like Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother to me. Very long and jammy without getting too crazy, kinda like background music you can just play while working or studying

I still really love Descending and think it’s genuinely one of their best tracks. That and Tempest completely save this album from mediocrity imo.
I totally agree with that take if we’re talking about the rest of the album
