I agree with the feeling. If the production leaned more towards a dynamic and modern approach rather than being muffled/-/analog and heavily flawed (Joe Baressi please stop engineering albums if you're reading sputnikmusic), FI could have had a much more expansive sound. The other issue is Maynard, who, despite his usual imperfections, presents here lyrics that are more questionable than ever before, they're not even pretentious... just straight up goofy. His vocal delivery sounding straight out of his 70s on tracks like 7empest doesn't help one bit. However, Invincible and Descending are too perfect of a tracks not to worship them.

I don't believe in "bad lyrics". Nothing is pretentious as long as it makes sense - probably everyone's realization while on LSD - words, even bad words, all have an exhausting, almost infinite, amount of MeAnInG. Yet, somehow, Maynard manages to sound like a complete asshat on a couple of these tracks (Pneuma, 7empest, Culling Voices).
