New album is WAY more varied and interesting than you give it credit for. I’d go as far as to say I don’t hear Mr Usher much at all in it, maybe more like King of Swords vibe? Either way I can see not everyone being into it but nothing on it is as mid as Mr Usher LOL

I'm on Ring 4 now and it is probably the best so far if only cos it feels like it has an actual character at the centre, it's weird to be more than halfway into a concept album and still just feel like I'm being spouted exposition at

anyway it's fine overall but I feel the same way as I did about Indigo Child and that fan collab EP, they just don't hit the same way as all their previous stuff (even Migrant) did

Yo sci fi King of Swords is the most appropriate analogy I'll stand by that haha

see that actually sounds hella fun to me but... I don't think a single song here is as catchy as King of Swords. like I'd struggle to hum a single melody after one listen

New album is a lot more focused and purposeful and thematically cohesive than Act V, at the expense of grandiose, epic, emotional catharsis. But this is the introduction to a new concept, not the climax of a story, so it totally makes sense to me. The album IS exposition. If this is “Act 1” of the new concept, I can’t wait to hear what its “Act V” will be. There is nothing on the new album that stands out as beautifully as Act V, but there are cool moments for sure particularly in the second half. The second half is definitely better than the first for me. I think tracks 1 and 3 will take a while for me to get into. Album feels like it lacks a proper intro track compared to their earlier stuff.

I think tracks 6 and 8 are my favourite so far on the new album. They’re the ones that feel the most hard-hitting lyrically. I can see people who don’t jump into the lyrical concept with both feet struggling a little to connect with the album, because of how laser focused it is on executing the concept. With regular bands there’s no reason to expect the next album won’t build upon the previous, or reach for greater heights, but with this being an intro scene-setter where Act V was a climax… you almost have to expect this new album to not hit as hard. Also It’s clear they weren’t able to spend as much money on the new album because the production isn’t as good as Act V. But that was also expected: Act IV and V were funded by that G4 dude I think, giving them more resources than they ever had before and likely ever will have. Those albums were lightning in a bottle hitting at the right time.

Antimai is a journey. Worth the wait. Think they have managed to make the music fit the themes of each song very well. As with all DH itll need a good few listens to know how it holds up against the rest of their stuff, but could be a winner.

Im not sure if I can think of any other band that puts out top to bottom bangers as consistently as DH

It isn't? I'm a noob when it comes to production but I was jamming it with my earbuds, car and soundbar and everything sounds so lush and clear to me on every device, I'm actually loving the production on this. Usually when everything is so clear in the mix I find a lack of cohesion in the sound, but I don't have that here. @minty901 enlighten me if you will haha, curious to A-B with some specific differences.

Oh I can’t enlighten you so much as it’s just my opinion. Some parts feel like they don’t punch quite as hard as they could, like the bridges in Ring 7 and Ring 5. I’ve also felt like Ring 7 is a little overproduced ever since the single came out. Love the song but I feel like a more experienced, “expensive” producer might have said “we don’t need this many sounds happening at once, less is more”. But again it’s just my opinion.

Speaking of production, what’s with that horrible sparkly/splashy sound in Ring 5 that sounds like drums in a 64kbps MP3?

halfway through Antimai and I wish it wasn't quite so on the nose

I agree the production feels a little off, it's pretty but lacking in punch

New album is pretty great! Super jazzy, almost reminds me of Stranger Heads Prevail era Thank You Scientist in parts, it's so cool! Actually think Ring 2 - Nature is the biggest surprise for me, fantastic song.

i think my big gripe with Antimai is the lack of dynamics, which is a wild thing to criticize TDH for -- but songs are all at roughly the same energy level and pace. Every song individually is pretty decent, but the band just seemed to settle on one 'eclectic' song template and then didn't deviate from it.

edit: Ring 1 is the exception that proves the rule

yeah. i feel like every song is laterally complex, like they tacked a bunch of different stuff together in kinda sequence and made every song this big long journey. but all those individual parts aren't necessarily that interesting or memorable in themselves so it starts to fall apart

I'm sure Violet fans are feasting rn, me personally I'm just waiting for the Indigo EP to get a follow-up

agree 100% row

I am not sure if they plan on returning to Antimai Act-style but I could see a lot of potential for exploring that world if the premise was to dump all the the exposition/"here are the cast of characters" into this one and then tell the actual story in future albums

but if you're going to sell me on your Very Obvious Satire World you gotta do more than just an album of "hey we do jazz now"

yeah this is definitely just the kickoff of the story, I really hope it gets more interesting from here lol

I saw someone on reddit describe it as 50 minutes of a DM explaining their homebrew world to me, which feels spot on lmao. I wanna play d&d not just hear you tell me a story dawg
