Damnation rules but it’s not even close to this.

This thing didn't get me in the right headspace for what I expect out of an Opeth album. Still amazing but man... it just doesn't have that it factor.

This didn't reveal its super total maximum 5-ness to me immediately when I first got into Opeth either, but it's one of their absolute best for sure.

I feel like post-Damnation Opeth just got increasingly disconnected from the emotional drive that made the likes of Still Life amazing, and Pale Communion was about as close as they've gotten to that since this album.

I think GR, Watershed and Heritage are among their finest work since MAYH.

Can't say I agree, but I've got my own niche when it comes to this band and, well, Heritage and Watershed don't quite hit it. I'd still give Watershed like a 7.7/10 though.

I swear most of the fans here have wildly different rankings, to me that’s a good thing.

Yeah to each their own! At least we agree they're infinitely cooooool.

Yeah Opeth really doesn't have a bad album at all. Heritage is my least favorite but that's still like a 6/10 or so.

I need to revisit Heritage again. Maybe I'll have a new appreciation for it after hearing Sorceress.

Heritage is amazing! PC and Sorceress are a step down imo. But still not bad albums at all ^^

Heritage to me felt like "hey let's try to do the same kind of wankery Dream Theater did on Systematic Chaos but with a 70s sheen" more than a natural, free flowing album.

doesn't get more natural and free-flowing than Heritage

I think PC is nearly just as good as some of their pre-Heritage stuff. At first, it was a massive step above Heritage but yeah, I'm hoping I'll hear something different this time.

When the instruments sound like they're sorta wanking over the fretboard from time to time, similar to typical Dream Theater wank... kinda feels contrived and not as atmospheric.
