Yeah. Even if it wasn't too drastic, I still think it would be refreshing. Maybe if they tried imposing a few "creative limits" on their sonic palette (eg, rein in Rudess' Nintendo noises, give a more prominent role to Myung's lyrics and playing, etc.) they would end up exploring some interesting terrain.

Would be cool to see them go jazzy; that piano outro to Illumination Theory.... Hope they stay the hell away from djent.
|

Agreed. I think exploring another style like that would put a fresh spin on their sound. Djent though... I think that would be a baaad idea. I don't see that working for them.

Their facebook page and website are all "static-y" and blurred. New concept album in the works?

I really dig this album, first hear it with very low expectations, and it turned out to be a very solid record.

I hope that there will be more great songs on it, Behind the Veil and Surrender to Reason are the only great songs for me

A Dramatic Turn of Events was pretty great IMO, Breaking All Illusions is one of my favourite DT songs

Agreed with Beardog, pretty much everything else from their RR years are pretty hit-and-miss though. Some people on the fb page are speculating that it means Metropolis Part III, but I doubt it.

Even if they'll make it it will never live up to part I and II

I enjoyed Silver Linings. Dramatic Turn was was awful and this was kind of boring

It's interesting how people are coming to the conclusion that it'll be a concept album just because of a static effect image

Hmm I kind of liked the composition on Dramatic Turns but the album sounds horrible. The guitar tone is way worse than Petrucci's usual nad Labrie's voice sounds so processed. I agree with the soundshift you guys proposed. They could explore a bit more relaxed jazzy sound, like Opeth's Heritage and Damnation for example. This would allow for Myung to shine and Labrie might be able to sing the more chill vocals (Ayreon's The Human Equation really showed how this is his strong point nowadays IMO). Sadly I think this will never happen because Rudess' just likes his nintendo solo's too much.

The thing is Rudess would be the most well versed in jazz and i think if Petrucci wants the band to go in that direction then jordan won't bring all those weird synth sounds to the table.

They'll just keep plodding long with their current sound, not utilising Mike and down back into the mix Myung goes.

Mike did not impress at all. He can probably play with all his limbs and his nose simultaneously, but he's just too mechanical. As for Myung, he was more audible on the past two albums (still not enough obviously), but his tones haven't been as crisp as the old days. His bass sounded bad on the s/t

I guess I just expected more from him tbh. We all know he can play his balls off so why not show it?
