vs and Vitalogy are awesome as well. PJ are the ones who came out of the whole thing with their integrity intact by never compromising and staying true. (Despite releasing some shite)

I actually think Pearl Jam has been fairly consistent. They defifinitely peaked in their early years. But I enjoy what I have heard of their recent releases.

"I consider grunge a genre unto itself"

that's where you're wrong. grunge is more the name of the movement of late '80s and '90s alternative rock. similar to how NWOBHM was a movement of '80s heavy metal. alt rock, being the broad genre it is, obviously has many different influences including punk, metal, funk, glam (mother love bone), psychedelic (screaming trees), etc.

I don't disagree with any of the points you just made. I just have a looser definition of the word genre, I guess. There are bands within every genre that cannot be summed up simply by the definition of that genre.

Yeah, kind of a shame they're the 2nd least popular of the 4 on the site, after PJ.

Most ppl seem to prefer AiC and/or Nirvana the most.

because AiC kicks ass and nirvana left one hell of an impact being the guys who defined grunge music, though i personally hated them

Check my poll:

SG got a little less hate than Nirvana overall, but it's close.

But I think SG is less popular than Nirv, largely because Nirv threads seem to get bumped more often.

Having said that, this rules. Opener/closer combos hardly get any better than Them Bones/Would?

(added note: Nevermind has more votes than any other Grunge Big 4 album, and it's got a 4.1 rating)

Nirvana is the most 'popular' in the sense that more people have heard/listened to it. However, among people who actually know their grunge consider AiC and SG to be far superior.

actually, some of us who "know their grunge" don't even make the comparisons
