I checked the first couple of songs, seems more depressing than angry if anything, especially that intro holy fuck. But good shit, will definitely check full album when I've got time

Why is it that drums from extreme metal before the year 2005 blow everything out of the water.

"Converge's Jane Doe I honestly didn't appreciate as much until my ex and I split. In my 23 years of life, I've never been as hurt as in that moment (might say something about my priorities but whatever, I'm a hopeless romantic)"
Hmm an album doesn't really appeal to me if it's main selling point is how 'relatable' it is or anything, almost makes emotion seem like a gimmick. I mean this album first and foremost is a songwriting masterclass but the anger is an added bonus when you need to let off steam

Converge's Jane Doe has pretty technical songs and some slamming riffs, but it's the combination of everything that makes it what it is, the production that enhances every gritty riff, the cowbell, the distortion of the vocals; it's why it's more enjoyable and one of the few albums that can be truly enjoyed the most when something like that happens. It's a concept album about a dissolving relationship, and it was meant to be enjoyed the most during moments like that.

i'm just saying it might not be a bad idea to start with something that is more immediately enjoyable from a musical / compositional standpoint.

Nah I'm really not a fan of metalcore at all, and no that's not me trying to be edgy, I just hate the general sound. I quite like the original stuff like Unbroken (they rule hard) which was more like heavy hardcore punk, but it seems to have evolved into something almost completely removed from that hardcore attitude

unbroken's not that far off from the bands i was referring to though

90s and early 00s metalcore is very, very different from stuff like killswitch, as i lay dying, all that remains etc. there's no radio pop cleans, no boring simple chug chug riffs (or at least they never overstay their welcome), no at the gates worship and songs tend to have a more chaotic and unpredictable structure (what a surprise, a hardcore offshoot being chaotic? well i never)
if you like unbroken, expect a lot of that, but a little more technical and occasionally more dissonant. good bands that aren't converge, in no particular order:
botch, coalesce, zao, 7 angels 7 plagues, integrity, rorschach (probably the oldest metalcore), shai hulud

Townsend never did something as good as this again. Too bad the crazy and genius Devin is dead and instead we got this boring artist that he is nowadays.
